Iceland day 5

Today we are starting out with a hike on the Skálafellsjökull Trail. We started out on a sheep ranch walking across part of their grazing area before beginning a climb up along the jagged mountainside. Trail is a large loop that will take us alongside another a glacier and its lagoon.

As we ascended, we had beautiful views of the glacier fed river below us.

We requested the hilltop where climbing we could see the glacier lagoon we are hiking too in the distance. We have an on and off light rain falling on us.

Once we reached the edge of the lagoon, we hiked along its side. The glacier was on its other end. The Lagoon had multiple smaller icebergs floating in its middle

We soon bear to the left and head back up the mountain towards Starting point. This hike will form a large loop as we look back we see the glacier and a lagoon from a more impressive angle.

The area we are walking over now at one time was covered by glacier. Now there are just small, snowmelt, lakes, and eroded  hillside.

There is a large boulder in the middle of the flat failed. That has a sign explaining how the glacier moved these rocks in times past.

The trail is marked by these green and yellow stakes. The trail drops sharply down into a valley

We cross another Valley Meadow before cresting a final pass leading back to our starting point

We were wet and cold, but found a family farm restaurant that served lamb, freshly raised and delicious homemade bread. We took a break to warm up before heading to our next destination, a black sand beach.

Following a peaceful walk on the beach, we went to a nearby, Viking village, a former movie set. On the hillside were a herd of goats

As we left the village, there was impressive use of the Mesa adjacent to us. Fortunately, with the fog there were other incredible mountain ranges that were not clearly visible.
We finished off a fantastic day with a delicious dinner
