Day 6 Snow, wind, and exposed slopes

 Last night was intense!

We had sustained winds at 30 miles an hour with gusts up to 60. We received 6 to 8 inches of snow at our campsite. I took a video overnight of the sound of the snow pelting the side of my tent, and the wind rattling it.

Temperatures were about 28° with a windchill of 15. I was very satisfied with my gear. My 10° quilt kept me plenty warm and the tent kept me dry, although at about 4 AM, one of the thin guy lines holding my vestibule tight snapped while frozen, and at 6:30 AM while I was preparing breakfast, one of the main guy lines, holding the front of my tent also snapped, luckily Ryan was also awake and was able to tie a piece of paracord on it and resecure it.

I remember to snap a couple pictures of our tent site prior to fully breaking down camp. When we set up last night, there was no snow.

It started to snow again as I finished getting everything in my pack so I grabbed my breakfast and headed down the trail to eat on the way. The snow on the ground was fairly dense, and had packed well overnight makeing it easy to walk on.

The wind remained strong, and the trail remained on exposed slopes, but I was able to stay warm while I kept moving.

I realized I lost my spoon after my breakfast today. It fell out of my pocket when I adjusted my pack I should’ve taken the time to put it back in my pack. 😢

Our last mile was steep downhill to our chosen campsite a nice flat spot right along the river with good sun exposure so we could dry out our gear.

We got in at 1 o’clock and considered continuing up the trail a little more, but decided to take an afternoon of rest, get our gear back in order and head out early in the morning to the next town and resupply.

After we had been in camp for about an hour, another hiker came in and sat down to rest. He was going to be continuing up the trail, another 4 or 5 miles. I asked if he had happened to see a long handled spoon on the ground, and he said, as a matter of fact, he had. He pulled my beloved spoon out of his pack for me; again God is good. 😃🙏

I ate to dinners and settled in for the night. Unfortunately, I did grab the wrong spice packet and instead of making my Parmesan Ramen, I put in 2 tablespoons of garlic salt. I added some extra Parmesan and finished it.

Today’s Miles 8.9 total trail miles 63.6
