Today we saw the awesomeness of nature. We started with a drive to
Diamond Beach. It derives its name form the chunks of ice that wash on the sand after flowing into the ocean from the nearby glacial lagoon.
Following the beach visit, we walked a short distance up the river to the lagoon. There we did my favorite adventure, a zodiac boat tour through the lagoon where we saw many large icebergs on our way to the edge of the glacier. We all put on emergency dry suits and headed out to the boat.
there is a fisure at the top center of this ice burg, our guide says that it will break apart in the next day or two forming a new shape. only about 10% of an ice burg is underwater. again our guide informed us that as the underwater portion splits, the new piece will float up out of the water explosively.
As we approach the edge of the glacier it is apparent how large it is. We keep a safe distance away as chunk can break off and fall into the lagoon at anytime. We did hear a large piece crack, but did not capture it on camera. Our guide was great. he was entertaining and informative.
On our return to the dock we stopped at a "seal hot spot" and were not disappointed. there were a couple of seals relaxing on the rocks. They seam to love getting pictures and posed a lot.
we returned to the dock, got one last group picture on the beach, and said good bye to our guide. It was a great adventure.
We ordered a few fish tacos from a food truck in the lagoon parking lot, and they were delicious. Speaking of delicious, Alyssa was impressed by this modern day viking, and I couldn't pass the opportunity to embarrass her by asking him for a picture, although i couldn't get Alyssa to pose with him,
We headed out to our next hiking location. Along the way we took the opportunity to stop at a few more incredibly beautiful waterfalls.
After another beautiful and scenic drive we arrived at the Fjadrargljufur nature conservation area. we hiked along the top of a valley with incredible waterfalls and sheer walls.
We returned to the cars and headed into our next overnight destination. We passed a neat mesa that rose out of nowhere.
We arrived at our next town, checked into the hotel and headed to dinner for another great meal. Before going back to our hotel we had to go see some puffins. At dinner our waitress told us about a hot spot for the at a nearby light house, and it did not disappoint.
heading back to the hotel we passed a picturesque country church up on a hillside
Another fantastic day done.
