Day 4 Don’t trust the weatherman

March 20, 2023

Our midnight to 3 AM storm actually started at 6 PM did not stop until noon.

We woke up in a light rain quickly, packed up and started walking.

Today was primarily uphill a total of 12 miles to the town of Mt Laguna.

Along the PCT there seems to be something each day that is interesting to note. Today is the unexploded ordnance caution sign.

We hiked in drizzle most of the day every hour or so this glorious orange globe would break through the clouds and provide 20 seconds of warmth.

As I mentioned before, this is typically a very dry section of the trail this year water is abundant we had multiple streams. We could fill up our water along the way.

As our elevation increased, I came across that one area but obviously seen significant water flow recently.

We transitioned again in environment from highDesert into Pine Forest.

We came across our first patch of snow along the trail. And reached our first area, where the trail was covered with snow we had to walk through, although it was a very small patch.

We arrived to Mt Laguna and located the restaurant and tiny house block.

We stopped at the restaurant for 1st dinner at 2:15. I had a ribeye with fries and a Fat Tire beer.

We then went to our tiny house unit. Downstairs is an electric fireplace, 2 seat couch, kitchen and bathroom. Each end has a loft with two beds. I took my first shower in four days, it was glorious! As a bonus they had coin operated laundry units as well. Clean clothes; Yay.

After we showered and started some laundry we went down to the general store only to find it closed at 5 o’clock, we arrived at 5:03, and it was dark. We thought we would do a second dinner and showed up back at the restaurant at 5:10 finding out it also closed at 5 we asked the owner if the kitchen was closed he said yes, we set couple of protein bars on the counter, and he said “you know what, hang on a minute come with me” and he took us back and they made us some food. Ryan got a burger and I took the Chicken Panini. I was so hungry again I didn’t even snap a picture.

The incoming weather is expected to be fairly nasty three days, rain and some snow we know we’re going to encounter that many times on the trail and decided tomorrow will be another training day. We are going to head out and do three days averaging 12 miles each to the town of Julian. Off to bed we go.

Day 4 12.2. Total trail miles 41.5
