Today is our last full day in Mammoth lakes. We start with a hike around Convict Lake.
Convict Lake gets its name from an 1871 incident in which a group of prisoners escaped from a Carson City jail. The posse tracked them to this location where a shoot ensued. Despite the violent incident, the lake is a beautiful site. It is rimmed on three sides by tall mountain peaks.
The water is crystal clear. The side of the lake that we start our hike is covered in mostly desert brush yellow flowered bushy plant is known as the rubber rabbit bush.
As we reach the far end of the lake, the brush turns more into trees Which have occasional openings nicely, framing the peaks
We enter a beautiful Grove of aspens With a wooden boardwalk winding its way through the trees.
We stopped for a minute, just to hang out at this bent tree
We got a partial group shot as we reached our starting point once again.
We loaded back up in the cars and headed down the road for a hike to Long Lake via little lakes trail. We again enter the John Muir wilderness for our last hike of the trip
Our Trip leaders, Steve and LB asked that each person took out a rock that could be placed in their yard to remind them of each of us. Valorie is a fan of rocks and many.
The trail winds its way up a rock strewn valley Passing many small lakes along the way
Each of the lakes had its own special view set among the mountains
We returned to our condos and cleaned up for a delicious dinner at a local restaurant. The following morning we loaded up for our drive home, but not before we stopped at Schat's bakery for a view treats.
