New Zealand day 9 travel to Franz Josef

March 18, 2026

Today is a long 5 Hour drive We will be stopping along the way at a few locations to sightsee.  We take a beautiful drive alongside one of the area lakes. Our first stop was one of the Vista points, compared to what we’ve seen, it’s just OK.

Our next stop is the blue pools track. This will be a 2 mile out and back hike.

The trail starts off, walking through blush and green forest alongside a well flowing river.

We cross our first suspension bridge over the river that we have been following.

Short time later, we cross a second river that feeds the first if you notice where they converge one is a grayish color from the glacial runoff. The other is a brown color with the sediment from the recent rains. There is a demarcation line where the two meet.

The bridge taking us over the theater river has some impressive anchors in the Rockwall of the far end

A small waterfall just sits off trail that we missed on the way up

On the forward portion of the walk, we had just snow mountain peak to our back. I did see it on the return trip itself for a picture.

Next, we stopped at thunder Falls as we continued, on our way. This is just a minute or so off the road down a path. There were two buses here so we did not spend too much time.

Ships Creek will be our final sightseeing stop on today’s Drive. it is a board along the sand dunes on a beach of the Tasman sea.
