I woke up early this morning for our final day. We will be doing a whale watching Tour this morning. As we got ready to load up the cars the sun was just rising over the ocean.
We checked in and waited for the tour to start and continue watching the sun as it rose behind some low lying clouds.
We loaded the bus that took us to the dock where we met our boat
We went out on the ocean and waited. At our first location all we saw was some seabirds.
The ship actually uses hydrophones to listen for Whale noise to try to locate them.
We moved a few times and eventually rushed to an area where a whale was just rising its tail as it dove back to the bottom for his 45 minute rest.
For a while, we waited then speed to a new area and found a sperm whale floating on the surface with the occasional water spout. We watched it for about five minutes before it raised his tail and dove back down too.

We left the Whale grounds and headed towards the coastline where we began spotting large polls of dolphins.
After our whale, watching trip we went on a sea kayak tour. First, we suited up with cockpit skirts, and PFD’s.
We launch our kayaks and paddle as a group through the swells of the open ocean
We made our way towards a small cove where we all grouped together, hold it onto each other’s kayaks while we watched the seal basking in the sun on the rocks
Where there are seals there are typically birds as well. We saw a number of them perched on the rocks.
We paddled away, soon getting back to shore
After another 2 Hour drive, we arrived in Christchurch where we started our adventure. We cleaned up at the hotel and then all went out for a farewell team dinner.
And of course we had to give a proper happy birthday to L. B. For supporting Steve and all of these trips that he plans.
