DSW Day 3 Wire Pass, Nautilis, & Toadstools Page Arizona

Today is day three of our Desert Southwest Adventure. We are starting off at the Wire Pass trailhead, roughly in an hour from Kanab, where we started. We will be continuing on today to the Lake Powell resort in Page Arizona. This hike is along the way. We will stop at two other stops during our drive as well.

Early on, as we start the hike, I am drawn to some of the desert plants and multiple rock formations.

With less than a half mile in, I can tell today is going to be a high volume picture day. We have close-up rock, formations, distant, mountain formations, and beautiful foliage all around.

1 mile in and we get to our first very small slot canyon. Just ahead we’re going to have a much better one.

Again, we have more beautiful desert plants

We have come to some incredible striations on this rock. Christy said it is a good representation of her brain, her words, not mine.

Just after entering the main slot canyon we see a cool looking log stuck right center of the canyon channel.

A little ways into the canyon there’s a 10-15 foot drop off where a ladder has been installed for climbing down.

I was waiting to take a clear picture of the next minor slot, and Dori decided a poker head back out for a quick little peekaboo

there is a large flat rock wall with a number of petroglyphs. on the side of the rock. (The art of carving symbols into rocks is called petroglyphs.)

The canyon opens up into a large tee intersection with Buckskin Gulch. We started to head down this canyon , but are encountering water on the canyon floor and I’ve decided to turn back.

The dry streambed has many different colors of rock and sand in it from erosion off the canon walls

After a quick break, we turned around and headed back up the canyon to our vehicles, loaded up and took a short drive to our next hike, which is called the Nautilus. This pretty purple flower was the canyons way of saying goodbye as we turned around.

We arrived at the parking location for our next hike. The rock here is a noticeably different color which causes the sand also to be a much lighter color. There are awesome rock formations just above the gray rock which has swirl marks along its face

We arrived at the rock known as the Nautilus which appears to swirl like a wave of water. It is definitely a cool looking feature.

After the Nautilis we are once again back in the car and headed down the highway 10 minutes to the Toadstools. The  mountains around here are really interesting with their alternating red and white colors

As we hike alongside the river drainage we can see the different sedimentary layers very clearly

We’ve reached the Toadstools, which are amazing! There are also white sandstone cliffs that almost look like they have cities carved into them. There’s a large depression on one of the walls with what looks like elephant feet at the bottom.

As a return to the cars, we pass the tan brown and white mountains, which we’ve started calling the triple chocolate range. Milk chocolate, dark chocolate, and white chocolate.

After a short, three minute drive arrive at the lake Powell resort for our next two nights, beautiful view views from the hotel and restaurant.

I tried for a good sunset picture, but there was just not much color in the sky. The rock formations today were remarkable. I am blessed to have such a great group of friends to travel with, and a creator who is giving us so much beauty to marvel over.
