March 10
Today was a last-minute hike with a couple of friends from a hiking group. It was short but a good workout. We went to Cardiac Hill in Auburn California.
On the way down, we walked the road for about halfway until we arrived at an overlook offering beautiful views of the river.
From the lookout we joined the main trail and dropped down to the shore of the American River.
There’s a fair amount of water flow with some rapids directly across from us. I love this time of year where the snow melt increases the rivers flow. We spent a few relaxing minutes by the side of the river before turning to head back back up Cardiac Hill.
With the steepness of the trail, there is heavy erosion channels visible. Not sure I would want to be on this trail in a heavy rain
Looking back through the branches of a trail side oak tree the river is visible down below in the center of the screen. We are about halfway up the trail at this point.
With the warming weather wildflowers are beginning to poke through. This single flower picture is amongst a number of them, popping up along the side of the trail.
As we get higher, we have more spectacular views of the river or below. Not too long ago, we were standing at its shore.
Towards the end of the trail, we arrive at a water channel that we walk alongside of. Looking into the channel, we find a number of salamanders, submerged and crawling along the bottom.
One final look of the canyon give us a glimpse of the beauty we have been walking through.
Today’s hike was short and only 3.7 miles, but we climbed 840 feet in just about a mile.
