Echo Takes to Lake of the Woods via PCT

July 13, 3024

I’m hiking with 9 other people today. We are on the PCT from Echo Lake to Lake of the Woods. I’ve got 13 extra pounds of trail magic in my pack today for thru-hikers along the way.

We reached the upper portion of Echo Lake there’s actually two of them, upper and lower Echo Lakes. This is the lower echo lake top end and upper Echo lake is just a little bit smaller. We will be passing it soon.

As I mentioned, upper Echo lake is just off to our side now

This overlook of both of the Echo lakes is really pretty. From here will be entering desolation wilderness in just a couple moments.

Just slightly off trail a little below us is another high mountain lake named Tamarack lake. It’s barely visible here through the trees looking back from the trail. From the trail Junction sign there is another beautiful view of the two echo lakes

Just up the trail a few hundred yards is a better view of Tamarack Lake. It sits in the upper portion of this valley.

We’ve come to a nice green area formed from a high mountain meadow. After coming through the desolate rock area It’s a nice break.

We are at the Lake of the Woods Trail Junction. It’s about 1140 feet of elevation that we’ve climbed and we are at 4.8 miles for the uphill portion. I pushed ahead of the group and I’m just taking a little bit of relaxation time as I wait for the group to meet up before we break off to the Lake of the wood.

As I waited for the group, I encountered two through hikers Flo-rider  And One step. Each of them very enthusiastically enjoyed some trail magic

Leaving the PCT we passed through a beautiful section with wildflowers on the way to Lake of the Woods

A little past the saddle, there is a good picture of the mountains through the trees. A few hundred feet later we get our first look at Lake of the Woods, beautiful

We have reached Lake of the Woods. Absolutely beautiful and a great place for lunch and a quick swim

There are some Trailside Sierra Tigerlily that are beautiful alongside trail

A short time later, I come across this beautiful purple Fire Weed

Heading back downhill offers some great views that you don’t necessarily see on the way up

I passed a female hiker who did not seem to speak much English and I don’t think understood I had trail magic. A minute later I met overpace who is from Germany. He is the previous hikers husband and he spoke some English. I gave him an orange for both him and his wife and continued on.

I encountered Mosey. He was happy to have an orange and some Pringles.

I began to run into hikers in fairly quick succession.  Soggy and Bow

There is a Trail crew working on some trail improvements. They are breaking up some of the larger pointed rocks in the middle of the trail.

I began to run into hikers….

Snooty,  Tortilla, and Arson

Big chill and Yogurt, for some reason, their pictures didn’t load on my phone🥲

Rambo

Profesor J

I don’t know why it surprises me, but God is so good. I was afraid being this close to Tahoe and hikers having a zero day that I would not have a lot of takers for the trail magic, but I just gave out my last item.

Another 1.5 miles and we were back at the marina.

I treated myself to an ice cream and we headed to the cars.

11.5 miles with elevation gain of 1873 feet.
