Day 54 Sleeping in a Cave

I woke up to a stunning sunrise.

I gave a little bit of time for my tent to dry out some, and dried my sleeping bag too. I had some breakfast hit the trail at 7:30

I have crossed over the mountain ridge that was above me and I’m dropping down into the canyon on the opposite side of the mountains

More beautiful views of the valley and cities below, with clouds hanging overhead, which I am above.

Went up and over another range and continue to have incredible valley views with the occasional stream.

Found a new flowering plant today.  It is the Prickly Phlox, I also am first seeing this Shield Fern

‘tis the season, poison oak is beginning to spread along the trail.

Purple nightingale, have a yellow bud within the purple petals of a flower it’s beautiful.

This portion of trail has steep switchbacks winding down the canyon

Common Yellow Chaenactis is a new flower growing close to the ground.  We have seen the Thick Leaved Yerba Santa before, but I do not remember if it had its full blooms.

Today I have come through the mountain range in the first picture. I am heading towards the river and the second.

Leon and Yeehorn are a father and son I met on trail. Leon is hiking, his dad Yeehorn joined him for this short section. When we came to the trail, their friend, Linda had trail magic for us! Delicious noodles and vegetables with whole shrimp!

I cross a Metrolink train line on the way uphill to my next campsite.

This is the completion monument for the Pacific Crest Trail. This is the location where the north and south ends met and the trail was officially established. June 5, 1993.

I’m walking through a canyon that has these giant exposed cliffs, seemingly of sand, but when you get right up on it and look at it, it’s actually all hard rock and looks as if somebody has cemented everything together

Cowboy camping is when you do not set up a tent, you put your ground cloth down with your pad and sleeping bag and sleep in the open air. Tonight I am going to cowboy camp in this cave.

Today’s miles 18.8 Total trail miles 627.3

(PCT mile mark 448.0 due to Flip completion of 200.7 and -20 due to fire closure)
